GPS manufacturer Garmin sprang out of left field on Wednesday with an unexpected entry in the mobile phone market that will challenge the iPhone. Garmin’s ambitious Nuvifone will feature a totally touch-based interface, wireless Internet access, a browser along with a host of other Web accoutrements, and of course, GPS.
Garmin’s biggest assault on Apple will come by way of the Nuvifone’s 3.5G Internet access , which promises download speeds significantly faster than the iPhone’s much-bemoaned 2G access. Ga

Thursday 31 January 2008 @ 9:46 pm

Do mobile services have the potential everyone believes? Google certainly hopes so. Last year it launched Android, its OS for mobiles, as well as offering a new search service for phones in the US.

Now, with faith in the future, it’s launched that bigger and better (but actually more local) mobile search service in four other countries – Britain, Germany, France and Canada, as well as setting up engineering groups on both sides of the Atlantic to come up with new mobile applications, according to the BBC.

Where people searching Google on mobiles had to be specific about search types or make

Judge Extends Microsoft Oversight to 2009

Thursday 31 January 2008 @ 3:19 am

As part of a 2002 consent decree with the federal government, Microsoft agreed to federal oversight of its business practices to ensure it didn’t use its monopoly power in the computer operating systems market to unfairly inhibit competition and control prices. Portions of that consent decree were set to expire in November 2007, but Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly extended the date in order to hear arguments presented by two groups of states arguing the consent decree should be extended five more years. Industry watchers generally felt that Kollar-Kotelly would let the decree expire on schedule—albeit with admonishments that the government would continue to keep a close eye on the Redmond software giant—in part because the B

Sprint, Clearwire Talking WiMax Again?

Thursday 31 January 2008 @ 3:13 am

Back in November, telecommunications operator Sprint publicly cut ties with wireless operator Clearwire over deploying WiMax wireless broadband service, heralding a period of belt-tightening and re-evaluation within Sprint as it’s watched its subscriber retention decline, decided to lay off 4,000 employees and shutter 125 stores, and instituted an executive shakeup that included the departure of its CFO.

O2 Revises UK iPhone Tariffs

Thursday 31 January 2008 @ 3:07 am

In the UK each network provider has so many different tariffs available that it can be confusing – very confusing. After research among its customers O2 have restructured its tariffs, and among the big winners are iPhone owners, although there’s speculation that their fees might have come down because of lower than expected UK sales, possibly 10,000 below expectations, Vnunet reports.

Previously, iPhone customers had to pay upfront for the handset ($540), and had a choice of three different plans, costing $70, $90 or $110 a month.

Under the changes, f

iPhone, iPhone, Wherefore Art Thou, iPhone?

Thursday 31 January 2008 @ 3:03 am

Last week, analysts Tony Sacconagui at Bernstein Research looked at quarterly financial numbers from Apple and AT&T, looked again, and did a little bit of head-scratching. Apple claims to have sold 3.7 million iPhones to date, but AT&T claimed to have activated only 2 million iPhones. Although the figures don’t account for some inaccuracies and iPhones that had been purchased over the end-of-year holidays but not yet activated, the figures seemed to indicate that at whopping 1.4 million of the iPhone sold to date are either sitting in inventory, being used in a phone-free “iPod touch” mode until buyer’s wireless contracts expired…o
