Refurbed iPhones at Best Buy for $50 Off

Electronics retailer Best Buy (which, until Wal-Mart lurched into the game just after the holidays, used to be the only third party retailer offering iPhones) has announced that it is now offering refurbished iPhone 3G units on sale in its store nationwide. A refurbished 8 GB model goes for $149, while a refurbished 16 GB model goes for $249. Both prices represent a $50 discount of the iPhone’s normal retail pricing.

The Curse Of Silence For Nokia Sets

They’re calling it the Curse of Silence, an exploit for the Nokia N60 that can prevent the handset from sending or receiving text messages, and it’s been made public by F-Secure. Although the texting capabilities of the handset can be halted, all the phone’s other functions remain intact. The exploit was made public on Monday at the Chaos Communication Congress, according to InformationWeek.

There’s no such thing as an iPhone Nano, but if you believe the guys that make silicon sleeves and cases for every Apple product under the sun, they’re on the way.  Two manufacturers of cases have so far added “iPhone Nano” pages to their pages, despite the apparent lack of a phone to fit them on just yet.

Paid Android Apps Coming in 2009

Google’s utopian-style Android Market, where everything is currently free, is about to get an infusion of capitalism. According to a new e-mail sent to Android developers, the marketplace will begin its march toward maturity (and profits for developers) in early 2009.

Report: Smartphones Need Malware Protection

A new report from Unstrung’s paid research service Unstrung Insider finds that smartphones need stronger malware protection as companies and consumers increasingly rely on the devices to manage their businesses and everyday lives. And the report expects mobile carriers will begin offering mobile malware protection services during the next year as a way to differentiate themselves from the competition.

While rumors of a so-called $99 iPhone were quashed this weekend when Wal-Mart officially began offering the phones for a mere $2 below MSRP, there’s hope for bargain hunters yet. In a surprise move, AT&T began offering refurbished iPhone models the same day, for a much more significant price cut of $100, placing the cheapest models at only $99.

Mega-retailer Wal-Mart has confirmed the rumors: as of Sunday, December 28, the company will be selling Apple’s iPhone 3G…although the retailer hasn’t been able to finagle a substantially discounted price on the handsets. Google Gives Dream Bonus

The New York Times has reported that this Christmas, as a means of cutting back, Google has foregone that $1,000 an employee cash bonus and has opted instead to give its more than 20,000 employees worldwide unlocked Dream phones. The cell phone gift was first mentioned in the Valleywag blog.

Last Saturday a Continental Airlines Boeing 737 ran off the runway at Denver International Airport into a ravine. The resulting fire destroyed the right side of the plane, and 58 were injured, although none killed.
