R. Kelly Trial Set to Begin in May, Wilco and M.I.A. Nominated for Shortlist Prize, Pitbull Arrested and More

R. Kelly’s long-delayed child pornography trial finally has a new start date: May 9th. Today a judge also ruled that Kelly can remain free on bail and doesn’t have to cancel his current tour despite this week’s missed court appearance. While Kelly managed to escape the judge’s wrath, the city of Hampton, Virginia, did not, as the judge ruled that Kelly must cancel his January 13th concert there because of a court date the following day in Chicago.

Fifty-four albums have been announced as nominees for the 2007 Shortlist Music Prize, which names the best album to not sell 500,000 copies. Among the nominees, who were selected by Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody and the Killers‘ Ronnie Vannucci, are Wilco’s Sky Blue Sky, LCD Soundsystem’s Sound of Silver and Rolling Stone’s Top Album of 2007, M.I.A.’s Kala.

Looking to cash in on the High School Musical success — and searching for yet another reason to not show music videos — MTV has hooked up with the HSM producers to make the made-for-TV movie-musical The American Mall.

Rapper Pitbull was arrested and charged early this morning in Miami for driving under the influence. Perhaps he was depressed about his new album’s decline on the Billboard charts.
