Using a Native WordPress Gallery

Posted by admin in WordPress, HOW-TO, W... | 09.24.2010 - 9:00 pm

For several years now the 960px grid system (960.gs) has been designers’ favorite pick to help structure and design web layouts. As screens and resolutions have gotten bigger, I’ve found that the 960 grid system does not always fit my needs. 20px gutters and only a 940px content […] Continue Reading…

        Six Apart Acquired by VideoEgg

        Posted by admin in WordPress, HOW-TO, W... | 09.22.2010 - 9:00 pm

Six Apart has been acquired by advertising network VideoEgg and merged into the company’s rebrand as SAY Media.
Six Apart is perhaps best known for their self-hosted blogging platform Movable Type and their hosted blogging service TypePad. Though SAY Media will not discontinue these products, it remains to be seen how the advertising network will influence their future.
A former power-house in the blogging industry, Movable Type’s popularity began to falter when Six Apart released version 3 in 2004 with more restrictive licensing. In fact, the Google Trends graphs for Movable Type and WordPress are almost inverse of each other, showing a steady decrease in Movable Type popularity and a steady increase in WordPress popularity beginning at roughly the same time as Movable Type 3′s release.
If you’re unsure about the future of your Movable Type or TypePad blog, now is as good a time as any to move to WordPress […]

960 Grid System is Getting Old

          Posted by admin in WordPress, HOW-TO, W... | 09.21.2010 - 10:36 pm

For several years now the 960px grid system (960.gs) has been designers’ favorite pick to help structure and design web layouts. As screens and resolutions have gotten bigger, I’ve found that the 960 grid system does not always fit my needs. 20px gutters and only a 940px content area is a bit too small for the modern web. While designing Themify, I found a new grid layout that works quit well for designing in this day and age. If you’ve never heard of 960 I’ve detailed both it and this newer gird system below.

            Backing Up WordPress

            Posted by admin in WordPress, HOW-TO, W... | 09.20.2010 - 9:00 pm

You can’t be too careful these days. You’ve put a lot of work into your blog, and it would be a shame to see it lost forever just because you accidentally deleted something you shouldn’t have, it was hacked, or your server had a catastrophic meltdown.
There are many ways to backup WordPress, so I’m just going to cover some of the easiest and most complete methods.
First of all, your files are easy to backup. Since WordPress can be downloaded at any time, you only need to worry about files that you’ve customized or uploaded, which should leave only your wp-config.php file and everything under the /wp-content/ directory. You can easily backup these files by accessing your server via FTP or SFTP and downloading them.
Now for the database, which includes all of your content and settings. Just like almost everything in life, there’s the easy way and the […]

Pin Your Blog with WordPress and IE9

                Posted by admin in WordPress, HOW-TO, W... | 09.18.2010 - 9:00 pm

The public beta of Internet Explorer 9 launched just a few days ago, and WordPress.com has already launched support for IE9′s new pinning feature.
WordPress.com users can now pin their blog to their Windows taskbar, allowing them to immediately launch the blog from the taskbar and write a post, moderate comments, and view stats from a contextual menu. Self-installed WordPress users can also join the pin party with the new Internet Explorer Site Pinning plugin. The plugin is only two days old, so it’s not as fully featured as WordPress.com’s implementation, but more features are on the way.
The one Windows PC that I do own will forever remain on Windows XP, so I won’t be able to take part in the IE9 festivities, but I’d love to hear your take on IE9. Should we shudder and be fearful, or should we cheer and be joyful?

WordPress and the Headers Already Sent Warning

                    Posted by admin in WordPress, HOW-TO, W... | 09.16.2010 - 9:00 pm

The scenario begins like any other troubleshooting scenario. You’ve just installed a plugin or theme on your WordPress blog, modified a file, or you’re simply checking on your blog. Suddenly, an error message just like the following looms over the page you’re viewing like a dark cloud.
Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /path/blog/wp-config.php:34) in /path/blog/wp-login.php on line 42
Remember the first rule in troubleshooting, don’t panic! First, you need to interpret the error message. Offhand, it would seem as if line 42 of the wp-login.php file was the source of the problem, but that’s a common misconception. In fact, the problem is on line 34 of the wp-config.php file, and line 42 of the wp-login.php file is just the victim.
Now that you know where to look, what do you look for? Believe it or not, this problem is usually caused by […]
