Posted by admin in WordPress, WordPress... | 10.02.2008 - 2:49 am

Revolution Theme Going Open Source: Brian Gardner’s Revolution Theme for WordPress is going 100% Open Source. All the themes that are currently on Brian’s Revolution site will no longer be available as or October 31st and will be replaced with a set of new themes that will be developed and released under the GPL. The original Revolution themes will continue to be supported for those who have purchased them in the past. The new GPL themes will also be sold in packages that include support, access to customizations, tutorials and other items. Brian explains his decision in the linked post, talks about his plans for the future of Revolution and explains why he chose to remove the original Revolution themes from his site.
I have met Brian at various conferences and we have become friends. In our past discussions on valid and financially viable models for theme developers and designers to […]

Matt Mullenweg #14 most influential on the web - BusinessWeek

Posted by admin in WordPress, WordPress... | 09.30.2008 - 5:33 am

Matt Mullenweg #14 most influential on the web - BusinessWeek.: According to BusinessWeek, Matt Mullenweg is one of the 25 most influential people on the web. He shares the accolade with the likes of Steve Ballmer, Steve jobs, Joi Ito and Jon Stewart. At first I thought that this was a ranking much like the 50 most important people of the web from PC World but this appears to be more of a collection. Matt is labelled as “The Publisher” and WordPress as “the blogging service that most serious bloggers turn to”.
The associated article is more about how the web is magnifying the influence of jon Stewart and others like him in engaging the American Public in online discourse about the political campaigns. Be sure to check out the whole slide show.

Comment Spam with more Kung Fu?

Posted by admin in WordPress, WordPress... | 09.23.2008 - 11:45 pm

It is no secret that Weblog Tools Collection is a magnet for comment spam. I am not sure if this is something to brag about but Akismet has caught over 3,588,568 spam comments as of writing this article. We spend a considerable amount of time moderating comments on this blog and lately the time spent has increased many fold. Let me explain.
Since automattic spamming of blogs has mostly been reduced to a trickle due to the likes of Akismet, spammers are now individually targeting blog posts with highly relevant, and in many cases highly convincing comments. I moderated and subsequently spammed a comment today that was over a hundred words long, on the pros and cons of one of the themes on our daily theme posts. I thought the comment was a very well written review of theme until I looked closely. The URI of the poster was a refinancing […]

News: WordPress.com Ad-Free and WordPress for iPhone

Posted by admin in WordPress, WordPress... | 09.19.2008 - 9:53 pm

For those that are on WordPress.com, Matt and the Automattic team introduced their new Ad-Free version of WordPress.com for a modest fee of 30 credits per year or $0.08 per day. Matt explains the reasoning behind the existence of the ads on WordPress.com and Lorelle writes up us a nice tutorial on how to activate this feature and some information on the ads themselves.
In other cool WordPress news, the WordPress for iPhone app has been downloaded over 100,000 times! Ranaan, who I met for the first time in SF this year and is BBQ averse :), provides a breakdown of the downloads across countries and then runs down a list of new features that are being worked on for version 1.2 including landscape mode, comment moderation and enhanced image options.

            WordPress Developers’ Toolbox

Posted by admin in WordPress, WordPress... | 09.18.2008 - 1:53 am

WordPress Developers’ Toolbox: Smashing Magazine has put together a quite large list of various tips, tricks, tutorials, documentation, resources, themes, design help and everything else in between for WordPress. As a matter of fact, I am surprised that it was not released as an “eBook”. I do wish that the data was organized better with better linking within the article, better headings, lesser massive pictures and a better way to navigate. But the collection is quite large and there are lots of information there to browse through.

1000 things I’ve learned about blogging from OJB

Posted by admin in WordPress, WordPress... | 09.07.2008 - 5:31 am

1000 things I’ve learned about blogging from the Online Journalism Blog.: An interesting and long-ish list of lessons that the author (I could not figure out who wrote this article from their list of authors. I am assuming it was Paul Bradshaw. Multi-author blogs really, really need to think about adding the name of the author to their templates/themes.) has learned from blogging.
Some of them are absolute gems such as “First knowledge, then analysis, then ideas” and “A blog without comments is broken“. More food for thought would come from the conversations surrounding such a list. I will add one of my own. If you consider others’ opinions, you will have involved and returning readers.
What have you learned about blogging?

                    Mark Surman on WordPress

Posted by admin in WordPress, WordPress... | 09.02.2008 - 7:44 am

commonspace: Mark Surman, incumbent Executive Director of the Mozilla Foundation is now blogging on WordPress (.com) after having mostly successfully moved his Typepad blog to WordPress. If you take a look around Mark’s blog and read his musings, the incessant flow of energy, the unending passion for the Open Source movement and the push for community, conversation and collaboration in various forms become quite evident.
Good luck in him in his new position and welcome to WordPress!
