Miriam Schwab of WPGarage.com has a neat little tip that explains how to install WordPress without using a domain name. The trick involves editing the Hosts file on a Windows machine to specify a domain name for the server address the site is hosted on. Mike Little who published a comment on the article made note that it’s not a Windows only trick but can also be performed on Linux/Unix and Mac OSX. This trick enables the previous site to stay online until the last minute where a simple DNS change will switch to the new site.

Automattic is now a Domain Registrar

Posted by admin in WordPress, LinkyLoo,... | 10.20.2010 - 9:00 pm

Automattic recently appeared on ICANN’s list of accredited registrars as ID #1531, meaning that the company is now a full-fledged accredited domain registrar.
WordPress.com is one of Automattic’s most popular services, and domain mapping is one of their most popular upgrades, so this is potentially yet another game-changing move for the company.
According to Automattic founder Matt Mullenweg, Automattic will continue to partner with GoDaddy until they have finished building tools to take advantage of their new registrar status over the next few months.
